I found The Dirty Penguin Coffee Co. on Instagram by accident and I’m so glad I did! In their first year of business they won the title of “Best Coffee Shop in California” that’s quite the accomplishment! Already impressed with being named Best in CA, I had high expectations walking in the door and they did not disappoint.
Dirty Penguin serves Stumptown coffee and Friday-Sunday they serve brunch. It’s a very hip, trendy little coffee shop with PLENTY of seating. The decor is simple, it’s mostly in white and pink, there’s a few neon light signs, the chair and bar-stools have cool geometric shapes and they have a pink, grey and white geometric accent wall that is the perfect background for those Instagram pics.
The menu is the basics: espresso, cortado, latte, cappuccino, mocha , etc., they also carry single origin cold brew, nitro cold brew and kombucha all on tap, they have a small variety of hot or iced teas and hot chocolate. All drinks are made with whole milk but for fifty cents you can change it to soy/almond/breve. The mocha can be dark or white chocolate or if you’re feeling adventurous you can get a penguin (both mochas mixed together). I went for the dark mocha and it was the best mocha to date! The milk was creamy, velvety and steamed/aerated to perfection! The dark mocha wasn’t bitter, it was actually quite pleasant. It mixed with the espresso and milk nicely. I also got a nitro cold brew, it was smooth, well balanced and citrusy in taste. It was a little stronger then i’m used to so I did need to add a little sugar to it but it was nice not having to drown it in milk.
Overall, I enjoyed my time at Dirty Penguin and can see myself coming back maybe for brunch next time. Everything was reasonably priced and well worth the money. The staff was friendly and helpful. This was a nice little find for me. Have you been to Dirty Penguin? Is there a coffee shop in LA that I should check out? Let me know in the comments below!
