Located in San Diego’s popular Gaslamp Quarter, Spill the Beans Coffee and Bagels is a great new coffee shop. They won the title of favorite cafe in 2017, considering they opened in August of 2017 that’s quite the accomplishment! The shop balances modern hipster and vintage perfectly. It’s a cute little coffee shop but they have plenty of seating! There’s two long bars, one with open air, which faces the street. There are also a few tables inside and a small outdoor seating area as well.
As you could tell from the name, they specialize in coffee and bagels and they do both very well. The menu is small but when it’s executed well, does it really matter? I got a mocha (shocking, I know) and my friend, Kevin, got the cold brew on ice. My mocha was really good! It comes in two sizes, small and large you can also get it hot or iced. It wasn’t overly sweet like most others i’ve had. It was made with whole milk and had a beautiful balance of chocolate and espresso. Kevin’s cold brew was citrusy, flavorful and the best part, it didn’t require any sugar or milk, which is the sign of a great cold brew!
They make the bagels from scratch and you have your choice of artisan compounded butter or house-made cream cheese. Your bagel options are: plain, roasted garlic & herb, serrano habanero & jack cheese, seed & grain for the health conscious, pear cran vanilla cinnamon, everything, bacon & white cheddar, or gluten free toast. Good luck trying to decide between all of those amazing options. The cream cheese options don’t make your decision making any easier. Some options include: plain, red chile and garlic, strawberry basil and balsamic, caramelized shallot and chive, among others. Kevin got the roasted garlic and herb bagel with plain cream cheese, it looked SO good I regret not getting one myself. They also have a few sandwich options that looked pretty good. One that jumped out at me was the millennial, it was avocado, chia, sesame, flax, sunflower and poppy seeds with sea salt.
Overall, my experience at Spill the Beans was a pleasant one. I wish it was closer to me so I could go more often but at least I know where to go for a coffee break the next time I’m in San Diego.
